At today's Senate Homeland Security hearing, Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth more than 100 times and declined to answer any questions, saying Chairman Rand Paul's stated goal was to put him "behind bars." Paul scheduled a contempt-of-Congress vote for August 5. The trap cable skips: Biden's preemptive pardon covers acts through the end of the Biden administration, not new testimony, so every answer today was fresh perjury exposure. Fauci's lawyer was escorted out of the room after trying to make a statement. Read the hearing record and the opening statement, not the 90-second clip. Put August 5 on the calendar.

💳 Agent Watch

Stripe's $10B router. Stripe is reportedly offering close to $10 billion for OpenRouter, the three-year-old startup between your app and every major AI model. OpenRouter was recently at roughly $140M annualized revenue, up nearly 3x since April, per The Information. At that run rate the offer is more than 70x revenue, a huge premium for a switchboard. The switchboard is the point: more builders route every model call through OpenRouter for one API key, fallback models, and unified billing. If Stripe closes, a payments giant owns a tollbooth on the AI supply chain. If OpenRouter is in your stack, export usage history and keep a direct provider key warm.

OpenAI's open harness. The scaffolding behind Codex and ChatGPT Work is now public: the open-source agent harness that decides when to call tools, when to stop, and how much context to burn. OpenAI is optimizing it to cut runaway token usage, which tells you where their cost problem lives. If you run agents in production, study this before building your own. The token-saving patterns alone are worth the afternoon.

The Word worm. Researchers demonstrated document-borne AI worms that self-propagate through Copilot for Word. A malicious file injects prompts into Copilot, which spreads the attack into other documents it touches. If an AI assistant reads untrusted files, you have an exfiltration path. Audit where your documents come from and lock down what Copilot can reach.

💰 Money play. Set a hard token budget per agent run in whatever harness you use. It catches runaway loops and worm-driven exfiltration at the same time.

⚠️ The Build

Copilot's price probe. The UK's consumer and antitrust watchdog is investigating whether Microsoft misled customers into paying more for productivity subscriptions after bundling Copilot AI into the suite. If the bundle is found unfair, businesses paying for M365 could see repricing or refunds. Check your M365 invoice and see what the Copilot line item actually costs you.

Capex hangover. Alphabet's free cash flow has turned negative and it raised its capital spending forecast, which sparked a sell-off. Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft report into a market that suddenly wants AI spending to show returns. Negative free cash flow at a hyperscaler pressures cloud pricing and the cheap AI products you build on. Hold off on long-term infrastructure contracts until these earnings land.

🧬 Frontier

Phantom findings. A new arXiv paper argues generative AI systematically manufactures false positives in science: results that look real and are not. The authors reach back to Francis Bacon's "table of absence," checking that a property fails to appear where it should not. If you use AI to validate product ideas, run literature reviews, or automate research, treat every AI-surfaced citation as unverified until you open the source yourself.

RNA machines. Nature covers RNA becoming a nanotool maker's dream: strands that fold, switch, and reorganize into a new generation of cellular technologies. Programmable tools at cell scale are early, but this is the kind of platform shift that spawns whole product categories. If biotech is anywhere near your roadmap, this is the survey to read.

🐢 The State of Play

The pacing petition. Anthropic and OpenAI backed an employee-led initiative on July 28 asking the US government to "deliberately pace" frontier AI development. More than 1,200 employees signed, warning the leading labs could be close to automating AI research itself. If Washington acts, the pace of model releases, and the automation tools you build with, gets set partly by regulation. Read the actual statement before the hot takes bury it.

Robot ban. The FCC banned imports of foreign-produced humanoid robots and power inverters, adding them to its covered list as an "unacceptable risk" to national security. The move targets China and signals broader hardware decoupling. If you build physical AI products or source components, check whether anything on your bill of materials touches the covered list.

🪪 The Shield

Google's DMA loss. The EU found Google violated the Digital Markets Act, and multiple rivals may collectively seek $10 billion in damages. Platform rules and search distribution, the pipes a lot of online businesses depend on, are now under formal legal pressure in Europe. If Google traffic feeds your funnel, keep building owned channels. Distribution you rent can be repriced by a court.

New York's age gate. New York Attorney General Letitia James released final rules for the SAFE for Kids Act. Users will need to verify their age before seeing algorithmic feeds or getting notifications after midnight. Any app with New York users and a recommendation algorithm now needs a compliant age gate, built or bought. Read the final rules and price the integration before it prices you.

🎓 Level Up

A contempt-of-Congress citation is how the legislative branch enforces a subpoena when a witness refuses to comply. The committee votes, then the full chamber can vote, then it goes to the Justice Department for possible prosecution. It is separate from the Fifth Amendment right itself: pleading the Fifth is lawful, but doing it after being directed to testify is what puts the contempt clock on the calendar.
